About The Artist

TAN LIP SENG was born in Singapore in 1942. Taking up photography as a hobby at the age of 12, he went on to practise medical photography in a 42-year career with the Department of Medicine and the Department of Paediatrics at the National University of Singapore till his retirement in 2006. Outside his career, he is also an accomplished photographer with local and international acclaim. His numerous awards include the Singapore Cultural Medallion for Photography (1985), Photographer of the Year (Ngee Ann Photographic Art Exhibition, 2005), Fenton Medal of the Royal Photographic Society (UK, 1998) and the 2nd Diamond Galaxy Award of the Photographic Society of America (1996). He has been conferred prestigious Fellowships by both the Royal Photographic Society (1970) as well as the Photographic Society of America (1999). He is also well-known worldwide for his work with colour-transparency derivation images which kept him in the list of the World’s Top Ten Colour Slide Exhibitors from 1969-1988. Equally adept at travel photography, many of his works have been housed in permanent collections in Austria, Australia and Singapore.

In this exhibition, he presents for the first time ever, a cross-section of nearly 400 prints, showcasing his passion for photography for more than half a century.

About This Site

This is the official blog of "Painting With Light & Shadow: A 50-year Chronicle", a photographic exhibition by Tan Lip Seng, which was officially opened by RAdm (NS) Lui Tuck Yew, Acting Minister for Information, Communications & the Arts on 25 August 2009.

The exhibition was held at the Ngee Ann Cultural Centre from 21 - 30 August 2009 and attracted up to 1,400 visitors, including close to 400 people on the opening night.
